Week 7 Blog Post: Art as a Culture

1a) I think the artist was trying to gain more of an inventory of the kind of animals that were in his/her surroundings. Some animals appear more than others because of how often these animals are seen in comparison to other animals. In sense, the artists could have been the first biologists; trying to make sense of their surroundings by expressing it in the best way they possibly could. Another possibility is the reverence the artist may have towards the animals, something of seeing them as deity or figure that holds high respect. 1b) I think more animals show in the cave paintings than humans because of the reverence shown to these animals. The painting of the animals are more detailed and try to be anatomically correct compared to humans who have a stick figure-esque form to them. Maybe it's possible that there were more animals in the surrounding area in comparison to the amount of humans as well. 1c) Something these paintings can tell about the cave dwellers is the facet of hu...

Week 6 Blog Post

 1) If a death happens within a village, the village will separate within itself and the ensuing kins will do revenge raids on each other. There are no laws in regards to killing, per se, in which there is a trial and a sentencing if the perpetrator is found guilty, but rather a revenge killing is acted out against the tribe that committed the killing. 2) A raid party of 10 to 20 men are gathered and they travel to the enemy's village, which can be a 4 to 5 days trip on foot. After the attack, the raiders will retreat as fast as they can to create distance from themselves and the enemy tribe before the victim is discovered. 3) One advantage of being an unokais is having a reputation among your tribe and neighboring/rival tribes. The higher number of kills an unokais has, the less likely a raid will be attempted on his tri...

Week 3: Language

Part 1:    My girlfriend and I held the 15 minute conversation about our trip to New York during Thanksgiving. We haven't made plans as to what we are going to do and this was an opportunity to get some ideas going. I wanted to see a Knicks game, which was easy to convey using a shooting motion. Food was a little more complicated because of the specific types of foods we wanted to eat as well as what places to see. It was b frustrating for the both of us because I knew what I wanted to convey, but it was harder to use motions and body signals for specific things like going to Rockefeller Center. My girlfriend was getting agitated because she couldn't pick up exactly what I was trying to relay, which dragged on the 'conversation' longer than it needed. During this conversation, I think I had the 'power' because I was in control of trying to get ideas across and she was trying to figure out what I was wanting to say. The power of speech, to me, streamlines ideas ...
